Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to find out what Swedish football supporters’ opinions are on the 51-percent rule in the Swedish football leagues. The main focus is on whether they would like the rule to get abolished or changed.
The method used to examine these questions is a qualitative interview. The respondents were people who has a broad knowledge about the Swedish football leagues and are residents of Gothenburg or municipalities surrounding Gothenburg.
The research showed that there still is a strong resistance against abolishing the 51-percent rule. Two out of three respondents share the opinion that the rule should stay the same. One out of three respondents think that the rule should be overhauled or maybe even abolished totally. In 2009 a proposition was made about abolishing the 51-percent rule. All of the respondents had similar arguments.
The conclusion is that the majority wants the 51-percent rule to be kept as it is, as that is what is the best for Swedish football. The focus should be on the love of football and not about the money.
